Understanding the TOEFL test format and policies helps students prepare effectively and perform their best.

Testing Year:

The iBT test is offered multiple times a year. The iBT test can be taken as many times as needed. However, there is a mandatory 3-day gap between attempts.

Duration:

116 minutes

Scoring:

The four sections of the test are scored. Each section has a score from 0-30, The total score range is from 0-120. A score of 80 is considered proficient, but top universities require scores above 100.

Validity:

The test is valid for 2 years.

Administration and Testing Options

There are 2 options:

  • TOEFL iBT Test: computer-based at an authorized test center.
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition: computer- based at home, monitored by a live human proctor.  TOEFL iBT Home Edition is offered 24/7.

An adaptive test experience:

The updated TOEFL iBT will become adaptive, adjusting to each student’s ability level. This will create a more efficient and personalized test experience, and will allow students to showcase their full potential.

Duration:

90 minutes

Scoring:

The four sections will be scored the way they were previously scored and there will be an additional overall score on the 1-6 scale. The overall score will be the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band (for example, if a student’s section score is 5.125, they will receive an overall score of 5).
